January 20 Snow Event
A low pressure system moved across the Tennessee Valley during the day of
Thursday, January 20th. Widespread snow developed across the region during
the morning hours and continued through the afternoon. The snow became
heavy at times during the afternoon and early evening hours. The snow
then tapered off from west to east across the area during the mid to late
evening hours. Storm total snow amounts were generally in the 4 to 6 inch
range along the Interstate 71 corridor. Farther to the north and west
across the Whitewater and northern Miami Valleys storm totals were in the
3 to 5 inch range, decreasing to just 1 to 3 inches across west central
Ohio. Snow Amounts across south central Ohio and northeast Kentucky were
in the 2 to 4 inch range.

A very cold airmass moved in behind the low pressure system. This allowed
temperatures to fall into the single digits across much of the area by the
morning of the 21st. Northwest winds of 10 to 15 mph resulted in sub zero
wind chills through the morning hours.

Low pressure tracked across southwestern and central Ohio during the
afternoon of January 11. Widespread areas of snow developed as the low
moved across the region during the day. The heaviest snow fell near and
just north of the low track, across a swath from southeast Indiana into
southwest and west-central Ohio, where snowfall amounts of 4 to 5 inches
were common. Snowfall amounts to the north and south of this band were
generally in the 2 to 4 inch range.

As the main area of snow departed to the northeast Tuesday night,

east of the Cincinnati metro. This snow contributed an additional 1-3" of
snow accumulation overnight, bringing some total accumulations in excess
of 5 inches in some areas.

In addition to the snow, west winds occasionally gusting to 25 mph resulted
in widespread blowing and drifting of snow. This resulted in some drifts
over 1-2 feet in depth, and made roadways treacherous, as road crews were
unable to keep up with the constant drifting of snow over them.
